Celebrating God’s Gift of Artistic Expression
We believe that the creation and enjoyment of art can help us explore, appreciate and deepen our faith. Our Atrium Art Gallery features a new exhibit every four months. The exhibits are curated by our Atrium Art Gallery Committee, and they highlight the work of one or more local artists. We cordially invite our congregation and the public to visit the Gallery during office hours, and enjoy a variety of visual art mediums through these exhibits.
Landscape of the Mind
~ Eric Nykamp
God has a way of meeting people in desolate places. I think often of
people like Joseph, Moses and Hagar who felt that they had been blessed
by God only to find that what they had hoped for didn’t turn out quite as
they expected. God didn’t leave them at that point in their story. God kept
walking with them through the next phase of their story. These paintings
are the footprints of my journey with God through some of those places in
my own story.
During the last few years, I struggled with understanding how people and
institutions (which I had put my hope in for many years) now seemed to
disappoint me. During this same period, there were times when I also was
disappointed with how I handled my own emotions. I didn’t recognize at
first that I was going through a season of loss. Eventually, the moments of
grief were punctuated by periods of increasingly lengthy calm. During
some of these times I took long walks and drives, often listening to
scripture through my wooded neighborhood and the farmland and
shoreline of West Michigan. These paintings are the record of this journey
with God during this time of transition – a reminder that God’s presence is
present forever when everything else seems to be less so.
Artwork is on display August 27 – November 12, 2023.
